This is really cool stuff for those of you who enjoy applying technology to the world of science. Dr. Hopcroft, AKA Russ, as he likes to be called, observes the live results of the C.T.D. Cast....
The CTD helps scientists get an idea of the physical and chemical components of the water column. GREEN represents the amount of chlorophyll present - notice how it is higher in the water column where light has the greatest penetration.
RED represents the temperature - it goes down with depth.
BLUE Represents salinity (conductivity)- salinity becomes greater with depth ... because of fresh water surface run off and ice melt.
PURPLE represents the amount of oxygen. Notice how it goes down with depth. This is the result of two main factors - oxygen rich atmospheric gasses mixing with the top layer of the ocean water and as you increase depth there is less light penetration, thus less available light for oxygen producing phytoplankton!
