Sunday - 7/8/18 - In transit from the Middleton Island transect to Prince William Sound to the Montague Straight... a comfortable ride that should take approximately 6.5 hours traveling at around 10 knots per hour....
It’s been 25 years since I’ve been in the Sound! Right after I graduated college I took up a job at Prince William Sound Aquaculture as a technician and scuba diver. It was a great job and I had a wonderful experience working with four of the five pacific salmon species! I had no idea that the primary food stuff for juvenile salmon was plankton! And as fate would have it, here I am learning about the base of the food chain! My first time in the Sound was like no other - limited contact with the outside world - a marine radio and what we now call snail mail.... we also only got food and supplies twice a month!
The Prince William stations were originally chosen as research sites to escape the weather of the open ocean and to monitor the long term ecological effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill that occurred in 1989.
